The Island
Monhegan is a tiny island about 12 nautical miles off mid-coast Maine, with an area of just less than 1 square mile. It's home to a small amount of working fisherman, and is known for its history as an artists colony. No cars are allowed on Monhegan, but all the amenities are walkable. For more info on getting to Monhegan, please see the faq page!
Things to Do
If you are arriving early to the Island, then we encourage walking or hiking some of the beautiful trails. The rocky, Eastern side gives some of the best views, though contains some of the most difficult paths, whereas the northern, wooded portion of the Island provides some easier trails. The south side - Lobster Cove - has a famous shipwreck and is a nice place to catch the sunset, as well as being close to Monhegan Brewing Company.
PLEASE NOTE
There is only one ATM on the Island - please bring cash with you if you can. Smoking is only allowed in the village center. There are no trash cans on the Island: if you go hiking, please plan to bring out anything you can bring in and dispose of it at the hotel. There are no doctors or emergency services on the Island.
